ABOUT SELTA

SELTA is the acronym of the Swedish-English Literary Translators Association, which was formed in 1982 and has a current membership of about fifty, most of whom are resident in Britain.

SELTA welcomes contacts with individual translators in North America in addition to the contact it already has with STiNA. Initial enquiries can be directed to the SELTA Secretary or Swedish Book Review Editor as appropriate. We may be able to help with advice on British publishing, on authors currently being translated in Britain, on translators and their special interests, on prevailing translation rates, or on any other matters pertaining to matters on this side of the Atlantic.

In particular we welcome new subscribers to Swedish Book Review, and contributors of articles, reviews or translations. Please contact the Editor with proposals first before embarking on any new work, and if you have existing material you wish to be considered for publication, please indicate whether it has already been commissioned or published elsewhere.

SELTA's aims are similar to STiNA's: to promote the publication of Swedish and Finland-Swedish literature in English and to provide a forum for its members to discuss matters of common concern relating to all aspects of translating from Swedish and publishing in the English-language world. It holds one or two meetings a year in London, with occasional guest speakers, usually Swedish writers or critics, has a newsletter for members, and publishes Swedish Book Review, a journal intended for a wider readership and distributed worldwide. SELTA and SBR maintain contact with Swedish-language publishers and with relevant cultural organisations in Sweden and Finland. Many of its members are also members of the Translators Association of the Society of Authors; SELTA does not have the resources to offer the kind of contractual or legal advice that is available from the TA.

Membership is open to those in the British Isles or Europe who have had translation from Swedish published, in two categories: full membership for those who have had published (or in the case of a play, had performed or published) a book-length work; or associate membership for those who have translated and had published some other work from Swedish. Aspiring translators are also encouraged to translate or write for Swedish Book Review.

SELTA is run by an elected Committee. The honorary secretary is Tom Geddes and the current chair Eivor Martinus. Swedish Book Review is edited by Sarah Death, deputy editor Neil Smith, with an editorial board appointed by SELTA, and published by Norvik Press on behalf of SELTA. Subscriptions to Swedish Book Review from non-members are welcomed, at £15 a year in GB (2 main issues plus a special-topic supplement) or US$25 for surface mail, $30 airmail.
